Confessions of a globetrotting diehard ski fanatic.

It’s confession time. I simply cannot get enough of a ski trip. I’m not sure whether it’s being immersed in an environment completely foreign home, the thrill of hitting the slopes, or just the rewarding hot cocoa (or mulled wine) after a full day in the cold, but I’m in love with it. Don’t get me wrong, I have deep love for warmer climates (I recently discussed why Africa should be on your travel bucket list), but a skiing holiday is unlike any other kind of trip you can take.

Fun fact: Did you know that I once turned a three month gap year trip into an epic three year European adventure? Thanks to my dual citizenship, I got to immerse myself in the snowy wonders of the French Alps for eight months, specifically the breathtaking Alpe d'Huez! And while my French didn’t quite reach the expert levels I had hoped for, this trip formed a deep appreciation for the snow that has exponentially grown over the years.

Fast forward a few years, I’ve now explored Canada's finest slopes (four resorts to be exact), danced down the slopes of Queenstown, and even had a brief rendezvous with the French Alps again (right before the COVID-19 lockdown sent us packing). The buzz around Japan’s ski resorts has been incredible in recent years, making it a definite must on my ski bucket list! While it might be a few years away, the plan is to have our kids on the skis so we can share the love of snow together.

But planning a trip to the snow is a lot like orchestrating a symphony. There are so many moving pieces and they all need to play together in perfect harmony, otherwise your rendition of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 will sound more like someone playing Oasis’s Wonderwall at a house party. But fear not, because a good travel agent is more than willing to be your conductor. They can take away the hassle and leave you with nothing but excitement! From finding the perfect resort to sorting out equipment rentals, they’ve got you covered.

For example, are you considering a Euro ski trip this year? If you’re Europe-bound over the winter months, why not mix up your itinerary with a week in the French Alps? Picture this: a cozy snow-capped chalet, savoring cheese fondue and mulled wine after a day conquering the slopes. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

What I ultimately believe is the first time you travel to hit the slopes won’t be your last. There’s something genuinely life-changing about this kind of holiday, the crisp mountain air, the sense of adventure, and the thrill of discovering a new way to explore the world. So, make your winter dreams a reality! Whether you're a seasoned snow veteran or a first-timer, take the plunge, grab some skis, and hit the slopes.
