Booking My Maldives Honeymoon - Insider Tips from a Travel Advisor

As a luxury travel manager, I spend my days crafting honeymoons for other people. But booking my own? Honestly, it’s been a wild ride down the rabbit hole. There’s something uniquely stressful about planning your own honeymoon!

Of course, when I work with my clients, my goal is to take all that pressure off your shoulders. But for fun (and maybe a little therapy), I thought I’d pull back the curtain and share what I’ve been obsessing over as I try to choose the right Maldives resort, not just for me, but for every trip I curate.

Let’s bust a few myths and talk about what really matters when booking in the Maldives. So here is what has my brain ticking and what I’ve been considering for not only my own honeymoon but all the trips I craft for my clients.

 All-Inclusive or Not?

One of the greatest luxuries I've come to appreciate is a truly inclusive experience. When you're on island time, you don’t want to be mentally adding up cocktails or stressing over menus.

That "breakfast only" rate you found online? It can get expensive quickly. A simple lunch of a burger and beer at some resorts can cost USD $60 per person. Ouch.

I always aim to maximise true value for my clients—so you can relax knowing your meals, drinks, and activities are taken care of, without unpleasant surprises at check-out.

 In house reef?

Not all islands are created equal when it comes to snorkelling. Some resorts have a house reef (aka reef you can swim to straight from the beach or bungalow), and others require boat trips to see marine life. If snorkelling or diving is a priority, this can make or break your experience.

I have quite honestly been day dreaming of seeing turtles and fish swim by we relax in our villa so this has been an absolute must for me! This is why Vakkuru is high on my list!

Do I need a pool with my over water bungalow?

Do I need a private pool when I have the ocean at my feet? Technically no. Emotionally? I’m still thinking about that floating breakfast moment.

When I help you find your dream villa, this is the kind of detail I weigh up. Sometimes the pool adds that next-level feel to your stay. Sometimes it’s an easy upgrade to skip. But every choice should reflect you, not a standard package

 Is the Maldives Family Friendly?

Before becoming a mum, I’ll be honest, I assumed the Maldives was for honeymooners and couples. But now? I’ve seen first-hand how family-friendly some of these resorts can be, with kids’ clubs, shallow lagoons, and thoughtful touches for young travellers. I can already see us returning as a family when the kids are a little older. Soneva Jani is currently sitting in our top 3 pick to stay but I already have a bit of mum guilt booking a water villa with a slide on the roof without the kids so this might be on our future wish list.

If you’re considering a tropical escape with little ones, don’t rule it out—it just comes down to picking the right resort.

If you’re considering a family escape to the Maldives then I often recommend a stop-over in Singapore, start the trip with some activities and finish with some down time.

 Skip Malé (If You Can)

Malé is a gateway - not a destination. Where possible, I route my clients through Singapore or Dubai, then straight onto your resort by seaplane or speedboat. Because when the destination is this beautiful, you want every part of the journey to feel like it belongs there too.
